Winner of five Tony Awards, the story of the doomed liner was turned into a huge Broadway smash in 1997. With great special effects, this haunting musical weaves the epic tale of the courage and cowardice, the lives and loves of Titanic’s crew. This national touring production has amazing costumes and a set comprising of illuminated portholes, a deck that tilts and lightning that runs the colour spectrum and is a visual wonder.

One of Germany’s most promising DJs takes one step further into the limelight at the Nitsaclub/Apolo. Co-director of the tiny but excellent label Pärfum, the youthful Roccness is fast winning a name for himself for his exquisite fusion of dance and pop. The boy wonder perhaps owes some of his knack for blending things to his regular companion, the acclaimed ‘god of kitsch’ Andreas Dorau. Whatever the case, boogsters should get ready for a fun mix of acid, house, techno and disco.

Not only is the Turkish-Armenian cooking delicious at this friendly, casual little spot, it’s also a great buy and is a good stop for a late supper before a night on the town. The décor may not amount to much, but owner Garbis Gulbinkian offers a friendly welcome, and the Armenian music playing in the background lends an aural touch of exoticism as you sample well-made dishes like tatzki (yogurt with cucumbers), mantis (delicate meat-filled ravioli), sauteed red mullet, shish kebab, succulent baby lamb chops and honey-soaked oriental style pastries.

Virus has been the home for extravagant New Russians and $8 cocktails – the owner never went anywhere, even the dancefloor, without at least six bodyguards – but has transformed itself into a slightly more egalitarian place for the late night crowd. Prices have come down, the sound system has been unpgraded but the toilets – with embedded barbed wire in the men’s toilet seats – remain. Music varies from techno to the odd Russian pop visitor.

It’s not even St Patrick’s Day for another week and the Irish have massed in numbers already. This afternoon is billed as a two-hour feast of Irish music, song, dance and humour, with appearances by The Three Irish Tenors, Jan Curry’s Twenty Dancing Colleens and Brian Doyle with his own puckish brand of comedy. The event is hosted by local radio DJ Bob Rogers, with musical backing by the NSW Irish Pipe Band and the GIO Concert Orchestra.
