This exhibition is a timely tribute to one of Italy’s most significant 20th-century artists who died last year. Appropriately entitled ‘Metamorfosi’, the show contains over 100 works, which range from Levi Montalcini’s dark, layered canvasses from the post-war years, to the output that linked her to the Concrete Art movement and the extraordinary kinetic and aluminium sculptures that she produced in her seventies and eighties. The show also provides the chance to see inside the vast riverside arts complex of San Michele.

This riotous and wacky musical comedy stars one of South Africa’s all time favourite slapstick comedians, Tobie Cronje. Impresario Papa Pepe Hernandez hires a troupe of international cabaret acts to perform in Sandton Square, but they let him down. Ever resourceful, Pepe hires his own family to do the job – with chaotic consequences. A hilarious mixture of Spanish ramblings and visual humour, this is perfect festive season fare.

Bradley is a hot young sculptor who works with found objects, turning them into vaguely grotesque animalistic poses or perhaps crucifixions. ‘I try to bring back the gesture’ is how Bradley explained his art and he succeeds in a compelling and unusual way. Hard to look at and hard to look away from, this might be the time to take in or buy Bradley’s art and have the pleasure of saying ‘I remember when he was just showing locally and hardly anyone knew his name…’

This is the third sortie to Shanghai for the renowned British based Comedy Club. Previous visits have been hampered by high ticket prices and low attendance. This time the local organisers have seen to that so expect a house predominantly filled by homesick expats and curious locals. Standard English practice this is not. On the bill are Stu Who from Glasgow, supported by Hal Cruttenden, a comedian who ‘does a lot of stuff about being a bit of a fairy bloke’. Apparently he went down a storm in South Wales…

If you like maps, you’re likely to love this free exhibition. Although part of the commemorations of the 500th anniversary of the Portuguese landing in what is now Brazil, it focuses on the 18th-Century, the most important period for Portuguese cartography on Brazil. Of 300 maps unearthed in the archives of the National Library by researchers, 80 have been put on display of ‘New Lusitania’, as it was then called.

This Easter concert is also the monthly installment of the much-loved Early Music Series of the city’s top orchestral ensemble. With atmosphere to burn, the venue is a deconsecrated Old Town church whose pillaging over the centuries has been somewhat compensated for by trompe-l’oeil Baroque frescos throughout. The Kuhn Choir conducts a Mozart arrangement of Handel’s ‘Messiah’. Some outstanding soloists are onboard, so there aren’t any bad seats in the nave.

With the excitement befitting a new spring wardrobe, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts presents ‘Try This On’, five simultaneous shows that address the ways in which artists investigate social behaviour and self-presentation. In other words, it’s an exhibition about clothes and make-up. The programme is highlighted by works and installations by Pierre et Gilles, an artist team who use costumes and lighting to exaggerate the feelings of their photographs. Rounding out the show are thematic pieces by Nikki S Lee, Laylah Ali, Cameron Jamie and the duo Andrea Robbins and Max Becher.

This delicious Sunday show, aimed as much at adults as at kids, features five musicians, but no musical instruments. Directed by Paco Mir, of the celebrated comedy trio Tricicle, the show unfolds as a percussion concert that ingeniously explores the musical possibilities of everyday objects. There are two alternating versions. In ‘Bon Profit’ (Catalan for ‘bon appetit’), the protagonists are five bored waiters, who begin to tap out melodies on the crockery, while ‘Desconcert’ begins with the worrying predicament of a five-piece band who find their instruments have gone missing.

A splendid,
unpretentious basement venue that the comics love to play, so you’ll
generally see them at their best here. An excellent – if at times
chokingly smoky – evening is almost always guaranteed.
